Winners from this year’s Carolopolis Awards represented a wide range of architectural styles and a large swath of the Charleston area.
Presented by the Preservation Society of Charleston, the 70th annual awards named 12 building projects representing the best in the safekeeping of historical architecture in the Charleston area. The Preservation Society has granted 1,500 awards during its 70-year run. This year’s awards took place on Feb. 29 at The Charleston Place.
“Carolopolis projects are rarely about any one individual but how groups of those devoted to stewardship can collectively work together to tacklen challenges that can appear insurmountable,” Brian Turner, the Preservation Society’s president, said in a statement.
The awards span five categories: exterior, interior, new construction, resilience and pro merito. Pro merito awards recognize past Carolopolis winners for a commitment to preservation. Boone Hall’s cotton gin house received two awards for its interior and exterior work. Interior awards hinge on the public being able to experience the work. Carroll said it’s uncommon for a property to receive two awards at a single Carolopolis event.
Boone Hall broke ground on renovating the building in 2022, and the project to turn the interior into a museum and gift shop had origins in 2007, according to the Moultrie News.
We strive for excellence in everything we do. We see challenges as opportunities. We seek consistent collaboration, cooperation, and communication with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
“The entire SouthCon Group team performed very well in all aspects of the project. The construction team successfully coordinated the schedules of multiple entities, including our daily business of visitors and on-site tours. SouthCon demonstrated the highest-quality workmanship on the buildings themselves while staying on schedule, within budget, and being responsive to needed adaptations throughout the building process. I am proud to represent Boone Hall Plantation in sharing this testament to SouthCon Building Group’s exemplary work on our much-anticipated Gin House renovation and addition project. They did an incredible job of bringing this historic landmark building to reality.”
“The absolute coordination and professionalism displayed by this company was remarkable. I was amazed at their ability to solve problems that tend to arise in such large projects. SouthCon is a highly efficient and high-end company. A complete pleasure to work with on any construction project. Highly recommended.”
“It was a pleasure working with SouthCon on Pepperhill Park Sports Complex in North Charleston. I was exceptionally pleased with the professionalism, organizational skills and perseverance in making sure we were satisfied with the final product. I would gladly welcome SouthCon’s involvement in future City Projects.”
“SouthCon’s team of construction professionals demonstrated a willingness to meet city objectives and with the direction of the design professionals and others, your team worked enthusiastically to achieve our goals, both restoring and preserving the fabric of the original fire house while integrating new elements for the adaptive reuse that remain faithful to the heritage of the building.”
“The entire SouthCon team was professional, responsive, and provided the necessary guidance and support to us through every detail of the project. We could not be more satisfied with our completed school and would highly recommend SouthCon Building Group for future construction projects.”
“This construction project involved working in an existing park during operating hours, and this company provided for the safety of park patrons with a high level of concern. They were a good team to work with, and their expertise and commitment to the project make SouthCon an excellent general contractor.”
“Throughout the entire project, SouthCon demonstrated diligence and dedication to completing the work in a timely and professional manner while staying within our budget.”
“First, we were very comfortable having SouthCon work through the design process with us. We would never have come in close to budget without that guidance. They also did what they said they would do at every turn. There were no surprises out of left field, no emergencies that required thousands of additional dollars to fix.”
“On behalf of myself and our local operations staff, I would like to thank the SouthCon team for the excellent job on our Transfer Facility. The construction was well planned and coordinated. If we have other work in the area, we will be sure to contact SouthCon.”
“It has been a pleasure working with SouthCon Building Group on such an extremely high profile and important project. The professionalism displayed, team-oriented approach and willingness to work hard were greatly appreciated and directly attributed to the success of the Shem Creek Park.”
“Over the years, we have worked with many general contractors. SouthCon far exceeded my expectations in every aspect.”
