Each year during National Preservation Month, Historic Columbia honors projects and professionals committed to preserving the city’s architectural legacy. The 2019 Preservation Awards recognized efforts that blend historical integrity with creative reuse, helping keep Columbia’s history alive for future generations.

 

SouthCon Honored for Transforming Historic Fire Station into Vibrant Mixed-Use Space
SouthCon Building Group has been awarded a Preservation Award in the Adaptive Use category by Historic Columbia for its restoration of the Central Fire Station at 1001 Senate Street. Originally constructed between 1949 and 1951 and vacant since 1995, the historic structure has been thoughtfully revitalized into a modern mixed-use retail space featuring a rooftop deck.

The award recognizes exceptional achievement in repurposing historic buildings for contemporary use while preserving their architectural integrity. Through thoughtful restoration and adaptive reuse, SouthCon has preserved an important piece of Columbia’s architectural heritage while giving it new life.
