SouthCon Building Group has been honored with a National Excellence in Construction (EIC) Award by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) during their 2025 convention in Las Vegas. The company received the Pyramid Award as the National Runner-Up in the Historical Restoration (Up to $15 million) category for its exceptional work on the 1850s Gin House Renovation and Addition at Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens. This recognition follows previous accolades, including the prestigious Eagle Award and the title of “2024 Project of the Year” from ABC Carolinas.
The Boone Hall Gin House project involved the restoration of a two-story structure built over 170 years ago to house the plantation’s original cotton gin. Having been unused for 15 years, the building required extensive renovations to transform it into a multipurpose event venue, gift shop, and museum. The project presented several challenges, including addressing unforeseen structural issues such as a severely bulging north wall. The goal was to seamlessly integrate the historic building with the new construction while preserving its original character.
In addition to national recognition, the project received two Carolopolis Awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston in February 2024, honoring both the exterior and interior renovations. The collaborative effort included Goff D’Antonio Associates as the architect, EM Structural Engineers, and DWG Consulting Engineers for MEP services. Boone Hall’s Gin House was notably the only project to win in more than one category during that awards cycle, further highlighting the excellence and craftsmanship behind its restoration.
