SouthCon was honored by the Associated Builders and Contractors with three prestigious “Excellence in Construction” EAGLE Awards for this project, including the ABC Carolinas Award, the “General Contractor Project of the Year” Award, and the National Pyramid Award. Additionally, SouthCon received two Carolopolis Awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston in recognition of its exceptional interior and exterior renovations of the 1850s Gin House.
This project involved the restoration of a 2,829 SqFt, two-story brick cotton gin, originally built in the 1850s, as well as the construction of a 2,145 SqFt addition to house essential support facilities. The first floor of the restored cotton gin now includes a visitor center, gift shop, and a museum that highlights over three centuries of history. The renovated second floor is dedicated to versatile event space, offering an ideal setting for special occasions. The new addition is seamlessly integrated with the historic building via a second-floor glass-enclosed walkway, which connects a reception area, kitchen, restrooms, and mechanical and electrical spaces, while also incorporating an ADA-compliant elevator for accessibility.
